The Peace Lily

Also sometimes known as white sails, the long-lived peace lily is useful as a dual-purpose plants with attractive foliage as well as flowers; it also tolerates lower light levels than many plants. Flowers remain in good condition for several weeks, but when they are past their best, the flower stalks should be cut off as close to the base as possible. The white flower spathes turn pale green as they age and remain attractive for several weeks.

Spathiphyllum is particularly sensitive to dry air, which causes the leaves to shrivel and fall prematurely. Mist the foliage daily in the summer.

In hot dry conditions red spider mites often attack the plan. Increase misting and set the plant a dish of moist gravel to raise humidity and help prevent infestation.

ORIGIN: South America, hybrids.
HEIGHT: to 18in / 46cm.
POTTING MIX: Peat moss based.
REPOTTING: Move into a pot one size larger in spring until the maximum convenient pot size is reached; thereafter top-dress annually.
PROPAGATION: Divide large clumps in spring; pull the rhizomes apart carefully, and repot the sections individually.
KEEPING PLANTS: Keep out of direct sun, which will scorch the foliage.
